Who are We?
What is the Respect Life Committee? You're probably well aware of the high level of attention the Life issues are now receiving, and of His Holiness Pope John Paul II's call to counter the Culture of Death by defending Life. The Respect Life Committee is a group of your fellow parishioners who have banded together to take a stand for the value of every human life and to oppose those trends in our society which violate the fundamental Right to Life including abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia.
What do we do?
We work to educate the members of our parish and our local community on the Right to Life issues. We do this through articles such as this, arranging speakers or videos, and providing prolife literature from other sources.
Our group also encourages participation in public events to show support for the prolife cause which include prayer walks, vigils, etc. These events are peaceful, within the law, and are suitable for full family participation. This October, we again joined in the San Jose Life Chain, which was one of hundreds of Life Chains held nationwide. Each January, we help to organize the Prayer Walk for Life, which started in 1985 in Palo Alto and now takes place in Los Altos.
We also organize letterwriting to public officials and local media concerning current life-related issues. This pivotal year will keep us busy making ourselves heard.
Finally, we ask parishioners to help provide financial and material support to local organizations such as the Fremont Society which assist women in difficult situations to find positive alternatives to abortion.
What is our orientation?
Our group is inclusive of all who support the fundamental value of human life. We are not bound to any particular partisan or ideological identification.
We are motivated by the basic Christian imperative to stand up for justice for all individuals who, as Thomas Jefferson said, are "...endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."
